Abstract

There is an increasing understanding by business that design can enhance competitiveness and innovation performance. Britain's knowledge intensive sector has grown twice s fast as the overall economy. It is evident that a greater understanding between business and art and design is evolving, but that this has yet to fully permeate into educational institutions, which are hampered by departmental and subject-specific boundaries. The paper argues that the tensions between business and art are bridged by the skills of the designer and that design-led programmes of study have much in common with the entrepreneurship agenda. A parallel paper was delivered to the UK Higher Education Academy's Business Management Accountancy and Finance (HEA-BMAF) Conference in May 2007 - with the intention to stimulate interdisciplinary debate and to offer insights to enable us to realise the potential for advancement. As a direct result of this initiative, the HEA-BMAF is funding Swansea Institute to set up and co-ordinate a UK wide special interest group in entrepreneurial learning.
