Abstract

Abstract: There is much research that discusses the impacts of environmental problems on species and in more recent years the impacts of climate change, particularly (see, for example, Warren et al; Xu et al 2009; and Colwell et al 2008). This focus on species (in the literature), rather than individuals of a species, may be seen to mirror the conservationist’s approach to environmental problems whereby the individual interests of nonhumans tend to get overlooked. Further, individuals of the same species tend to get lumped into ‘wild’ and ‘captive’ categories, with the latter, again, often being omitted from conservationists’ concerns. But while wild and captive animals may require different treatment, they have at least comparable interests; interests as individuals themselves, rather than ‘as belonging to a species’. That this should be taken into account in conservative efforts is a matter of equity.
