Abstract
Although as a professor of Divinity, diocesan bishop and political controversialist Richard Watson has attracted the attention of historians in those disciplines, his pioneering work as a scientist and agricultural reformer, especially in relation to arboriculture, has been largely overlooked. This paper seeks to redress the balance by focusing on his enduring interest in the emerging fields of applied science and demonstrate his important contributions to the cultivation of trees, larches in particular, as a commercial enterprise.
