Abstract
What I want to ask you this afternoon is whether the ragwort and the poppies of our battlefields are simply a kind of decorative relief to the squalor and heroism of human doings, whether nature is just a backdrop to how we comprehend God as dealing with us in our religious experience. What is the relationship between the waste of the natural world and those losses felt by ourselves? Do they count? Or do they find you – and God – dispassionate?
