Abstract
This chapter explores the role of the environment in children’s experience of the reception class. The photographs, drawings, observations and discussion shared by the children co-researchers are used to reflect and evaluate how the environment may impact on the child’s experiences. The chapter focuses on the indoor and outdoor environment, as well as specific aspects of these spaces, including choice of play experiences, the more-than-human world, movement and conversation. Photographs and drawings suggest that children identify both indoor and outdoor environments as significant to their reception class experiences. There is also a focus on play and child-led environments as opposed to more adult-led experiences. Choice, affordance, physical development, and oracy are discussed in line with the characteristics of the reception class environment. The implications of listening to the “voice of the child” and using a diversity of methods to understand children’s views on their environments is explored.
